4 ways to give your IKEA furniture a complete makeover

Your IKEA furniture has been with you through thick and thin, but let's face it: You need a change. No need to throw out your Besta TV stand just yet, though. Give your IKEA furniture a facelift with a few of our favorite hacks -- your friends won't even recognize the same wardrobes they have at home.

1. Swap out the hardware. If you're looking for a quick and easy change, it takes just 10 minutes to switch the knobs off an IKEA dresser. For something classy and premium-looking, this brass knob can transform your furniture.

Another easy upgrade is to give minimalist floating shelves, like the IKEA Lack, a more lived-in look with antiqued brackets, like this one from Anthropologie. Drill little holes into your shelf so you can attach the brackets later, and don't forget to find studs before you drill into your wall.

2. Paint it gold.
It sounds too good to be true, but sometimes all you need for a luxe and simple makeover is a can of gold spray paint.

3. Upgrade with custom-made exteriors.
Startup Norse Interiors makes chic, high-quality pieces to retrofit your IKEA furniture. You pick the color and design from a variety of super luxe finishes. Then, you assemble the furniture yourself by fitting the Norse components over your IKEA frames.

The company's Scandinavian roots mean the pieces boast sleek design with a high-end boutique feel, but the prices are comparable to those of mid-range, mass-market stores: The IKEA frames and DIY process mean you pay less and all of the products are made in the U.S.

Right now, Norse offers pieces to upgrade Besta storage cabinets, and Besta media stand, but it plans to expand the product line later this year.

4. Cover it up.
Sometimes you're just tired of looking at your couch, no matter how comfortable it is. Based in Sweden, Bemz offers stylish slipcovers for sofas and chairs in dozens of colors and fabrics so you can feel like you have a new sofa without dealing with the hassle of actually buying a new sofa.
