Our CEO's top tips for furnishing a new home

Furnishing a space from scratch can feel daunting, but it can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience with the right approach. We’re sharing four top tips for furnishing a space from scratch shared by Lotta, the CEO of Norse, who recently moved into a new NYC apartment.

Tip 1: Plan your space

Before you start buying furniture, it's essential to take some time to plan your space. Start by listing the must-have items and consider the size and style to ensure they fit the room. For example, if you're furnishing a living room, you might need a sofa, chairs, coffee table, and entertainment unit. Once you have a clear understanding of the room's requirements, you can start to consider the style and aesthetics you'd like to achieve.

Lotta wanted our white oak collection as a family room focal point for its timeless design and Scandinavian background. By selecting her primary furniture pieces first, Lotta created a cohesive style and built the room around this piece.

Tip 2: Invest in quality pieces

When furnishing your home, it's worth investing in quality pieces that will stand the test of time. While it may be tempting to go for cheaper options, investing in quality furniture will save you money in the long run- as you won't have to replace it as often. Lotta's motto is: "When it comes to your home, it's worth investing in quality pieces that will stand the test of time."

By mixing pre-loved items with new, high-quality furniture, you can create a unique, personal style that is both sustainable and affordable. Lotta selected a washable area rug from Ruggable as an investment piece, which definitely pays off if you have pets or kids. A high-quality rug can last for years, especially a washable option, so you can keep it looking new and fresh for longer.

Tip 3: Have enough storage

Having enough storage is crucial for keeping your new space organized and clutter-free. Look for modular storage, like IKEA pieces, that can be customized to fit your needs. "People love designing their furniture because it maximizes space without sacrificing style," says Lotta.

A well-organized and clutter-free space can create a sense of calm and promote productivity. For your main storage pieces, you have the option to design something that is both beautiful and extremely functional. If you need something taller and narrower, our Sektion collection is a customer favorite. Our Besta collection is popular for any sized space, as the sizing starts as small as 15" or 25" high by 23.5" wide and can be combined vertically or horizontally to be as large as you need. You can create a functional and stylish space that meets your storage needs by choosing modular furniture.

Tip 4: Add personal touches

Personal touches in a home are essential to creating a welcoming space that reflects your unique personality. Whether it's a collection of books, family photos, abstract decorative objects, or sentimental objects– these small touches can greatly impact a room's overall ambiance. Personal touches can help you feel more connected to your space and create a sense of comfort and belonging.

Lotta tapped into her Scandinavian roots and added elements of nature to the room with live potted plants from Easyplant. Live plants create a grounding, serene atmosphere and make it feel personal. Adding natural elements to your space can help connect you to nature and create a calm and welcoming space.
